Do you have too much to do, and not enough time to do it? We all have the same amount of time each day. It's how you utilize your time that depends on whether you play catch up your whole life or not. In this article I will share 3 of my favorite time management tips to avoid getting behind.
1. Block Your Time for Tasks
Block your time in such a way to perform activities in large chunks. Scientific studies have shown that it takes 10 to 20 minutes to truly get into the flow of doing a task. It takes your mind awhile to acclimate to the task at hand.
For example, if you were writing a report, it would take you 10 to 15 minutes to get into a state of mind where peak productivity occurs. So therefore, the more times you have to come back to the task the more time you waste warming up your state of flow. Give yourself a specific period of time to work and complete a task.
2. Focus Your Efforts On The Vital Few
Most actions, decisions and tasks you perform are practically meaningless. In other words, 80% of your actions will usually only give you 20% of your results. On the other hand, 20% your actions will give you 80% in results. Thus, you should focus on those vital 20% of your actions which are going to give you a majority of your results. Outsource, delegate or eliminate tasks that are time drains.
3. Plug Your Time Leaks
If you have a hole in a bucket, and you try to fill it with water, you will never succeed. Whatever you put in will eventually go through that hole.
Managing your time is the same way. If your schedule does not work properly, it will have all sorts of time leaks in it. Despite your best use of time management, you will ultimately gain very little.
Let's say that you spend an hour a night watching cable television. Did you know you could watch the same amount of television in 40 minutes? Just TIVO your programs in advance and fast-forward through the commercials.
